Goodbye 2020

I started this blog during lockdown, and now South Africa is ending the year back in lockdown – level 3 for now.

My year has been a surreal one – staying indoors and away from work for months on end, spending so much time away from those I love, taking extra…

It’s only June??

It’s only June??

I started this blog as a way to express myself and to give myself something to do during the lockdown & quarantine caused by Covid 19.

In the 4 months since I fired this blog up, it feels as though we’re all stuck in a season of Doctor Who & there’s something MAJORLY wrong.

The fact that we’re living through a pandemic almost seems like a sideshow at some points. We’re seeing natural…

Right After Reading: The Buried Giant

Finishing “The Buried Giant” leaves me wondering whether the mist that invades the characters minds has invaded mine as well.

This is a fantastical story set in a world so like and unlike our own. The love between Axl and Beatrice forms the foundation of the story, and their devotion to each other is truly admirable.

This is one of those books that leaves a curious feeling behind. It…

Opening schools at level 4: A feasible option?

The Minister of Education, Angie Motshekga, delivered a briefing on Thursday, 30 April, that was, in a word – confusing. The Fear

“Ladies and Gentlemen, it is my great honour to welcome you to the 3rd Annual ‘Mind Matters’ Conference. We are so happy to be here, in sunny Los Angeles!”

The audience did that thing where they “whoop” as soon as their city is mentioned and Arah smiled to herself. The organiser spoke into the microphone, continuing her opening address and Arah felt herself zoning out…

Book Review: Hanya Yanagihara’s “A Little Life”

Book Review: Hanya Yanagihara’s “A Little Life”

“Wasn’t friendship its own miracle, the finding of another person who made the entire lonely world seem somehow less lonely?”

Hanya Yanagihara, A Little Life

Plot outline:

The book follows the live of four friends from their time in college into adulthood. There are flashbacks to the past, but it centres largely around their lives as adults. The story doesn’t really have a specific…
